This article provides basic guidelines on troubleshooting connectivity issues between a central Coffalyser.Net™ network server and one or more client applications on the workstations of end-users. If you want to troubleshoot the server status of a server that is installed on your own computer, see this article instead.
Note
The steps described in this article assume that you know how to find the Coffalyser.Net Server Selection dialog. The fields referenced in the article refer to fields visible in this dialog. For information on how to bring up this dialog and how to interpret the information in it, see this article.
- Confirm that the server is located elsewhere on the network by looking at the location field. If the location field shows this computer, continue by troubleshooting the server status. If the location field shows on the network or if the server is not visible at all, continue with the information below.
- If the server is visible but has an orange colour, this indicates that something is wrong with the Coffalyser.Net installation on the server. Continue to troubleshoot the server status on the computer that runs the server. The name of this computer can be found in the name field, and its address can be found in the location field. This may require assistance from your IT department.
- If the server is visible but has a red colour, this indicates that the server was added manually to the Coffalyser.Net Server Selection dialog using the Add Server button, but that it is unreachable.
- Check the server status by starting Coffalyser.Net on the computer that runs the server. The name of this computer can be found in the name field. If the server colour is anything other than green when viewed from the computer that hosts the server, continue by troubleshooting the server status on the computer that runs the server. If the server colour is green, continue with the steps below.
- On the computer from which the connection to the server fails, check if the server address in the location field is correct, and if it contains no typing mistakes or extra characters. Compare the address with the location field of the server as checked on the computer that runs the service to make sure that you have the correct URL format. Coffalyser.Net only accepts server URLs in the format http://computername:port.
- If this still fails, the problem is likely related to network security settings (e.g. a firewall or proxy server) that prevent the connection between the Coffalyser.Net client application on the workstation and the Coffalyser.Net server on the network server. Read more about the ports required by Coffalyser.Net for communication. You will need to enable communication on TCP port 1231 and, preferably, UDP port 1231 (for automatic server discovery).
- If the server is not visible at all, this indicates either that it is not running or that something is blocking the connection to the server.
- Check the server status on the computer that runs the server as described above for a red server. If the server colour is green, continue with the steps below.
- On the computer on which you cannot see the server, press the Add Server button on the Coffalyser.Net Server Selection dialog. Enter the URL of the server exactly as shown in the location field of the server as viewed from the computer that runs the server (something similar to http://computername:port). Other formats are not accepted by Coffalyser.Net. If this results in anything but a green server, troubleshoot this as explained above.
- If manually adding the server works and results in a green server, this indicates that communication on TCP port 1231 is allowed within your network but that communication on UDP port 1231 is blocked. To avoid the need to add the server address manually on every workstation (and to change it on every workstation should the server address change), we recommend enabling communication on UDP port 1231 as well. Read more about the ports required by Coffalyser.Net for communication.
