If you see the warning Unexpected SQL Server version detected while trying to update a preconfigured SQL Server for Coffalyser.Net, you are using an outdated version of SQL Server that can no longer be updated automatically by the latest version of Coffalyser.Net. To solve this, a manual update or reinstallation of SQL Server is required.
Background
Coffalyser.Net uses Microsoft SQL Server to store your data and settings. During installation and configuration of Coffalyser.Net, you have the option to let Coffalyser.Net install a preconfigured SQL Server, which is usually the quickest and easiest way to get started if you do not have experience with SQL Server yourself.
Like other software, SQL Server requires periodic updates. For very old versions, Microsoft eventually drops support, which means that compatibility and security issues can start to accumulate. The table below shows which versions of SQL Server have been included with Coffalyser.Net.
Coffalyser.Net Version(s) | Preconfigured SQL Server Version | End of Microsoft Support for SQL Server |
---|---|---|
v.240129.1959 | SQL Server 2022 | 11 January 2033 |
v.210226.1433, v.210604.1451 and v.220513.1739 | SQL Server 2014 SP3 | 09 July 2024 |
v.140721.1958 | SQL Server 2008 R2 | 07 July 2019 |

The last licenses for v.140721.1958 expired in 2022, and all customers should have updated at least once (to v.220513.1739) since then. This would have included an update of preconfigured SQL Servers of version 2008 R2 to 2014 SP3. Because of this, the latest version of Coffalyser.Net only supports updating from SQL Server 2014 SP3 to 2022.
If you are seeing this error message, this likely means that you are still using SQL Server 2008 R2. You may have skipped the SQL Server update during your last update to Coffalyser.Net by ignored the warnings in the configuration wizard, or you may not have used Coffalyser.Net for several years.
Solutions
The first option is to update SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2014 SP3, and then update to SQL Server 2022 again. This can be done in two ways. You can update Coffalyser.Net to v.220513.1739 or, if you already used this version previously, by reinstalling this older version and letting the configuration wizard take care of the SQL Server update. Once SQL Server has been updated to 2014 SP3, you can update Coffalyser.Net again to the latest version and let the configuration wizard take care of the update to SQL Server 2022. This requires access to installation files of a previous version of Coffalyser.Net, for which you can contact us if necessary. Alternatively, you can use a small update tool that we produced specifically for this purpose, for which you can also contact us.
The second option is to create a backup of your data, uninstall SQL Server 2008 R2, install a fresh preconfigured SQL Server 2022 using the configuration wizard of Coffalyser.Net v.240129.1959, and then restore your backup on the new SQL Server.
You are welcome to contact us to find out which option is best suited for you. However, please note that we can only offer limited support on updating an outdated version of SQL Server.
